At Timberbank Jr. P.S. we have a deliberate focus on the arts. We believe that the arts enhance and support all aspects of academic and personal learning while providing a creative avenue for expression working productively with others. Specialist teachers engage all of our students in grades 1 - 6 through twice weekly classes in both vocal music and Orff instruction, and drama and dance. In addition, students are introduced to visual arts exploration with their classroom teacher and they explore the power and creativity available to them through computer graphic applications in the computer lab.
Throughout the year we invite guest artists in both the performing and visual arts to help our students develop both a broader appreciation of global art forms and enhanced artistic skills while exploring those art forms.
We provide an enriched instrumental music program through our junior band where students rise to the challenge of demanding musical technique while enjoying the rich musical product of their teamwork.
The links below will provide you with a flavour for the rich and varied arts experiences available to Timberbank students.

- Black Light Magic
Black Light Theatre is a theatrical style, which was originated in Asia, but can now be found all over the world. It is a type of performance that uses a completely dark room and stage, black lighting (UV) and objects that have fluorescent properties. In such an environment, only certain costumes, props, and objects of interest will have florescent properties. All other objects, curtains, as well as some costumes must be dark and non-fluorescent. The illusions created by movements of fluorescent objects and performers dressed in fluorescent costumes are very effective. Our Black Light shows incorporated dance, mime as well as acrobatics to amaze the audience!

- Flag Dance
(Choreographed by Florence Chan) This is a beautiful production (dance, choir, piano and flute accompaniments). It celebrates the love we have for our beautiful country, Canada.
- Long Fan Dance
(Choreographed by Florence Chan)
A contemporary choreography based on traditional Chinese Fan Dance technique. The music is an arrangement of traditional Chinese folk music in celebration of spring.
- Tableau
Tableau is a form of dramatic presentation. Actors freeze in a tableau, creating snapshots to communicate events, ideas or feelings. There may be narrators and background music, but the actors don’t talk and only communicate with their bodies in a series of “frozen” poses and movements in between these still images. The examples below show how Tableau can be incorporated in a creative dance piece.

Poppy Animation
This animation resembles an ever-blossoming poppy, which symbolizes the perpetual struggle for peace and freedom and the importance of remembering the sacrifices we have to make to achieve them.
- Wushu
Wushu is both an exhibition as well as a martial arts sport, which is also commonly known as “kung fu”. Wushu demands both artistic talent and athletic skills. Last year, we hosted Wushu classes at Timberbank, which was well received by our students. The following video is a special performance at one of our Talent Shows by a former Timberbank student.
